@Janine: I've certainly had no problems with it on a desktop running Vista Home Premium. What problem do you have with it on a laptop?

Allchars website says it only works "partially" with Vista so anyone using Vista on a laptop is stuck with inserting characters in Word.

@Ryan:

Thanks for the link to your nice site. Personally, I'm not really a great fan of systems where you have to compose your text in one editor and then have to copy and paste it into the one your really wanted to use in the first place.

If you are Windows user, then I'd have no hesitation in recommending the excellent freeware utility AllChars. You don't have to be online to use it. It's as easy to use on a laptop as it is on a desktop. You don't have to break the flow of typing to click to insert characters. You can insert all the available special characters with just a few very intuitive and easy-to-remember keystrokes. And it works anywhere that you can type in text - word processors, text editors, input boxes on websites, and so on.

Details of how to get AllChars are in the article.

My only problem with this method is that it's hard to do on a laptop. I'm using this website to type foreign characters. I think its much more efficient, and it's possible to do with a laptop.
