Pero ¡ojo! no puedes usarlo de la misma manera en todas las ocasiones. Puedes decir take long con tal de que lo uses junto con un verbo auxiliar2. Por ejemplo:

It didn’t take long. (No tardó mucho.)
Does it take long? (¿Tarda mucho?)
It doesn’t take long. (No tarda mucho.)
Will it take long? (¿Tardará mucho?)
How long will it take? (¿Cuánto tardará?)
Is it going to take long? (¿Va a tardar mucho?)

etcétera…

Pero cuando no hay verbo auxiliar tenemos que sustituir long por a long time. Por ejemplo, it takes long o it took long suena muy extraño. Por otro lado, it takes a long time suena muy natural.

Por ejemplo para formar tiempos compuestos se usa formas del verbo to have (haber): I have eaten (he comido). Otros ejemplos de auxiliares son: do, can, will, be, etcétera.
